By GEORGETT ROBERTS, JOHN DOYLE and CYNTHIA R. FAGEN Eliahu Frishman, 33, was blasted once in the chest and was in critical but stable condition after surgery at Jamaica Hospital, police and relatives said.
The father and his 7-year-old son were taking a shortcut through the PS 197 schoolyard at Beach 8th Street and Hicksville Road in Far Rockaway at around 8:30 a.m. when the suspect, wearing a dark bandanna over his face, jumped from behind a row of trash bins and pointed a gun at the pair.
"All of a sudden, he came to ask my father for money," said the still-shaken youngster, who wears a yarmulke.
"My father said he didn't have any," explaining to the gunman that it was "shabbos."
"Then [the gunman] shot him," the youngster said, recalling the horror of watching his dad fall to the ground.
Barely conscious, Frishman had a good Samaritan whisk his son to safety at the temple, the Yeshiva of Far Rockaway, located half a block away.
"How silly the man is; he should have known Jewish people don't carry money on the Sabbath," the boy said, pausing for a reassuring hug from his grandfather at the family home. "I hope my father is going to be all right.
"I don't know why he had to do it to my father. I don't know why he should rob people. He should know better," he said.
The boy's mom, Chaia, 32, said her son, who was not injured, kept holding his dad's hand until help arrived.
"He saw the bloodstain on his father's shirt. He was very upset. He didn't cry, but his voice cracked," she said.
"He was scared. I kept telling him he did the right thing; he stayed by his father's side."
The masked gunman, wearing a red baseball cap, blue shirt and pants, escaped on foot.
"I kept him [Frishman] alert," said the Samaritan, who identified himself as Rabbi W.
"There was blood coming out of his shirt, and he was leaning against the fence. He told me that he didn't have any [money] and he got shot with a BB gun."
Several congregants, who are also volunteer paramedics, helped the victim until an ambulance arrived.
Frishman's wife was in a state of shock yesterday as she discussed the horrible attack.
"I never believed in a hundred years that my husband would be shot," she said. "He was born and raised here. We know everybody here. Everybody gets along.
"My heart dropped. My husband was not home. My son was not home. I thought, 'God forbid, the worst had happened.' "
