Two Company's To Sell ‘Kosher’ Cellphones
Two of Cell company's have revealed that they will begin marketing ‘kosher’ cellphones to the ultra-orthodox Jewish Charedi community. Cellcom and Pelephone say the phones will be voice-capable only and will not be able to send or receive SMS nor access the internet. The launch comes after leaders voiced concerns that wireless content constituted a threat to the sanctity of their community.
The two companies have obtained certification from a special committee of rabbis to distribute the “kosher” cellphones to the ultra-orthodox community. Until now, only MIRS Communications Ltd. had this kind of certification, but it subsequently had problems with the committee of rabbis, who claimed that the barriers in MIRS’ handsets to block content could be breached.
