N.Y., N.J. In Battle Of Badges

The city's top uniformed cop NYPD Chief of Department Joseph Esposito testified yesterday he heard New Jersey police officers berate NYPD Compstat czar Deputy Commissioner Gary McCarthy with obscenities after arresting him and his wife last year in a traffic squabble.

When the Deputy Commissioner called him from a police station after the arrest, The NYPD's top cop said, he heard one of the arresting officers ranting in the background.
"Who do you think you are?" the cop yelled, Esposito said. "I'm going to end your career."
Esposito vouched for McCarthy's honesty and integrity during the ongoing trial, saying he told the 24-year veteran to accept any summonses he was given and "get out of there."
McCarthy was cuffed and his wife, Regina, arrested last February when they argued with Palisades Interstate Parkway cops who had ticketed their daughter for parking in a handicapped spot at a gas station, authorities said, and McCarthy was ticketed for obstructing traffic, and his wife got a summons for excessive noise.
