Pedestrian Dies in Car Crash Police Link to Alcohol
New York - 25-year-old graduate student Hannah Engle was struck and killed by a drunken driver early yesterday in a hit-and run accident as she was crossing 14th Street and 2nd Avenue with friends in Manhattan.
The police said that the driver, Wole Parks, ran away. Four hours later and while still intoxicated, Mr. Parks showed up at the 94th Precinct station house in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to turn himself in.
Ms. Engle was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, where she died about 2 a.m.
A neighbor said Ms. Engle was taking classes in Judaic studies at the Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning and had worked with a program that sends volunteers to Jewish communities around the world for yearlong stints.
