World Renowned Figure Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum Passed Away At 91

Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY - World renowned figure, author of Berach Moshe and leader of Satmar Hasidim one of the world's largest and fastest-growing sects of Orthodox Jews, has passed away now in Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan, NY. and left us for a better place. He was 91 and lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Rabbe Moshe Teitelbaum the youngest son of Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Teitelbaum, of Sighet - (The Atzei Chaim) - son of the Kedushath Yom Tov, became leader of the Satmars in 1980, succeeding his uncle Joel Teitelbaum also a son of the Kedushath Yom Tov.

Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum had transplanted the tattered remnants of Satmar from post-Holocaust Europe to Williamsburg, giving the sect new life. Under Moses Teitelbaum, Satmar more than doubled its ranks, to an estimated 100,000 worldwide, building schools and expanding real estate holdings that are now worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
A Satmar historian, said that Rabbi Teitelbaum, known to his followers by his Hebrew name, Moshe, had likened himself to the biblical Jacob, who considered himself custodian of the great works begun by Isaac and Abraham before him.

"Jacob said, 'I'm not digging any new wells; I'm just watching the wells that the father and the grandfather dug, that they should continue to produce clean water,' " he said. "Rabbi Moshe said the same thing: 'Rabbi Joel dug the wells. I'm just tending them."

Rabbi Teitelbaum is survived by his wife, Pessel Leah; four sons, Aaron, Lipa, Zalmen and Shulem Elazer, all rabbis; and two daughters, Bracha Meisels and Hendy Halberstam; and at least 86 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum, named for the 18th-century founder of the Satmar dynasty, Moshe Teitelbaum, was born into rabbinic royalty in Ujfeherto, in what is now eastern Hungary, on Nov. 17, 1914. When the region fell to the Nazis, Rabbi Teitelbaum, then teaching at a yeshiva, was sent to Auschwitz with his wife and three children. Only the rabbi survived. After the war, he remarried and moved to the United States, where Joel Teitelbaum had re-established the sect. Moses founded a congregation in Borough Park, Brooklyn.

After Joel Teitelbaum died childless in 1979, the Satmars named Moses the rebbe, and he moved into the sect's seat in Williamsburg.

Moses Teitelbaum "took a moderately successful Hasidic group and really nourished its growth," said David M. Pollock, associate executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council. "It's now the largest Hasidic group in the United States."

If the Satmar schools in New York were a public school system, it would be the fourth-largest system in the state, after those of New York City, Buffalo and Rochester.

Rabbi Teitelbaum's leadership was such that even as the sect has threatened to split over the succession battle, it has continued to grow, said Samuel C. Heilman, a distinguished professor of sociology at Queens College.

"One of the signs of the Satmars' strength," Professor Heilman said, "is that in spite of this internal conflict, they're not on the verge of falling apart."

    Statement from Gov. Pataki

"Today I join the Congregation of Satmar Hasidim, and many other New Yorkers, in mourning the loss of Grand Rebbe Moses Teitelbaum. A survivor of the Holocaust, Grand Rebbe Moses Teitelbaum carried on the legacy of his uncle and predecessor Rebbe Joel Teitelbaum in rebuilding a community that was devastated by the Nazis. Today, New York is home to a flourishing network of Satmar schools and religious institutions that will live on as a tribute to the Teitelbaums. The Rebbe Moses Teitelbaum touched and inspired the countless people who came into contact with him while shepherding his congregation to enormous growth over the past decades of his leadership.

May his memory be a blessing for all of us."

    GRAND REBBE MOSES TEITELBAUM

“Grand Rebbe Moses Teitelbaum was a gentle soul who carried himself with poise and distinction. From the fires of the Holocaust, the Grand Rebbe and his uncle performed a miracle here in New York by rebuilding their community to match its glory days in Europe. Our hearts and prayers are with the Satmar community in this City and worldwide as they mourn the passing of their beloved spiritual leader.”

הרואה תלמיד חכם שמת כרואה ספר תורה שנשרף אמר רבי אבהו יבא עלי אם טעמתי כלום כל
    אתו היום
אבד חסיד מן הארץ, the World Lost Another Pious Person

While I am sitting down to write this blog entry I am still tired from being up last night attending the funeral of my beloved Rebbe, Rabbi Moshe Teitlebaum (Moses Teitelbaum) ZY”A. He was laid to rest next to my revered first Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum (Joel Teitelbaum) ZY”A. Two people who have contributed to God’s world in a way that cannot be dismissed even by their greatest enemies. Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum planted the seeds and Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum nourished and ensured that the plants should blossom.

Although he died at age 91, it still hurts tremendously. He personified a world that is that we can only study about. The son of the Atzei Chayim, for those who know who and what he was, the existence of Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum was a tremendous feeling of a connection to something we can 0nly dream of. Even after losing his father at the age of 12, he went on to study and eventually becoming the Rav of Zenta at the young age of 18. Then after losing a wife and three children in the holocaust he reemerged with strength to reestablish himself here in America. This is a loss that will apparently never be replaced for what he per. And for those who knew him personally like I did, his death is a harsh blow.

No, I did not study Torah with him, I did not converse in Halacha with him and nor am I going to write about his scholarship. I am a simple Chasid of his, who had the privilege to meet him the many times I went to him with a kvitel, see his Tish or just meet him at other occasions.

He was always this gentle person, full of compassion and with sound advice. On a personal level, I will never forget how he loved seeing me with my wife and children, even though he only knew me when I came to him. He was delighted to see the children and with such a bright smile and a gentle touch he would hand them the lollypops and talk and laugh with them. If a child cried he would be so disturbed and personally try to calm the child down.

If I did not know how to handle a situation in business or didn’t know to if I should or should not do something, his sound advice came in very handy. With him, there was no non-sense advice. It was usually so simple and to the point. After relaying to him my dilemma I never had to ask him twice or explain it better other than respond to his questions.

I had the privilege that he did my Siddur Kiddishin, which is something I will never forget.

This is the person I knew, which to this day I have not found a substitute.
It is true that the sun will shine again, however, as Shlomo Hmelech writes in Koheles there is a different time for everything, and now is the time of mourning. I ask all of you to please remember this great man, tell your kids and the following generations what you know about him and pay your respect to him. Because respecting a Talmid Chacham is required the same way we are required to respect God himself. Please light a candle, give some money to charity and study at least a Mishnah for his neshamah and say some Tehilim. Even the greatest Tzadik can be assisted by people on earth who do something for their Neshamah. I am sure that those who will do something for his neshamah will be rewarded. He himself was Tzadik, his parents and great grand parents for many generations were tzadikim and I am sure that they will help him pray in heaven for yeshiohs and refiohs for us on earth until the great day will come where the prophecy of the Navie Yeshya will be fulfilled,
"ו"בלע המות לנצח, ומחה ה' דמעה מעל כל-פנים; וחרפת עמו, יסיר מעל כל-הארץ--כי ה' , דבר
