Iowa - University Hospitals Employee Files Lawsuit
Iowa - University Hospitals nursing assistant has filed a religious discrimination lawsuit claiming she has been forced to work during the Jewish Shabbas.
Thresa M. Parker filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Davenport. According to the lawsuit, Parker first requested in May 2005 that her schedule be changed so she wouldn't have to work during the Shabbas. The request was granted, but Parker was again scheduled to work during the Shabbas.
Parker's lawyer, said the Iowa Civil Rights and Equal Employment Opportunity commissions have since issued Parker a "right to sue" letter. She is seeking unspecified damages.
University Hospitals spokesman Tom Moore declined comment saying it's against hospital policy to comment on pending litigation.
