MONSEY — A 11-year-old girl died yesterday after she was hit by a van while crossing Saddle River Road, Ramapo police said.

Leah Ausband, a Bronx resident visiting family in Monsey, apparently walked in front of a white van driven by Alexander Alexeev of Spring Valley, police said.

The van knocked her to the ground and ran over her, Sgt. Mark Emma said at the scene.

"She had serious injuries to her head and chest," Emma said.

The first officers to respond —Dennis Proctor and Andre Sanchez — attempted to keep her alive, as did Chevra Hatzolah Ambulance Corps volunteers.

Ausband died in Nyack Hospital's emergency room shortly after the 3:20 p.m. incident, police said.

The police investigation closed Saddle River Road between Route 306 and Route 59 for more than three hours, police said.

Alexeev was driving north on Saddle River Road when Ausband crossed the street from the west side of the road, Emma said.

Ausband, who lived in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, apparently was headed to Laruach Day Camp at the Beth Rochel Seminary. The camp is across the street from her relatives' home on Saddle River Road.

"Traffic was backed up for the light at Old Nyack Turnpike," Emma said. "She walks between two cars. She looks and makes her decision to cross. She apparently doesn't see the van coming."

The preliminary investigation — including a review of the scene and traffic conditions and interviews with witnesses — indicates excessive speed was not a factor, Emma said.

He also said Alexeev stayed within his lane.

Emma said the investigation was continuing and that additional people were being interviewed.

Emma also said the van would be inspected as part of the investigation.

The van had Connecticut license plates.

No charges have been filed against the driver.

"The two officers were shaken up, and everyone was shaken by this," Emma said. "This is a just a real tragedy."

Police said the girl was being buried last night in the cemetery at Route 306 and Brick Church Road.

If that's the case then I guess I was wrong. I was referring to the Journal News article that I linked to but it was edited by the moderator. The article said that no charges were filed. I guess they were wrong about that. Thanks.
