Brooklyn, NY - Chasidic Families Are Priced Out Of The Boro, For Western N.Y.
Brooklyn, NY - The cost of living in Brooklyn has become so outrageous for some Chasidic families that a Williamsburg rabbi has carved a path of enlightenment - all the way to Scranton, in far western New York State.
As many as 100 families are expected to flee to the serenity of Scranton, in Erie County south of Buffalo, where rabbis Isaac and Altar Rosenbaum are opening a 900-seat private school.
"We are a very large group in Brooklyn and everything has become very expensive here - house payments, taxes, bills, everything," said Isaac Rosenbaum, 39. "It's too much."
Fifteen families from the Nitra and Nadvornah sects have already signed contracts on new homes, the most costly going for around $229,000, said a broker.
The exodus from Williamsburg and Borough Park started in June after Backus took out ads in a local Jewish paper and on a popular Chasidic phone line.
Those ads averaged 40 calls a day, she said. The rabbis, who sermonize from the synagogue Mamer Mordachi on Bedford Ave., were the first to respond. After a Scranton developer bowed out, the rabbis purchased the shuttered intermediate school for $400,000, Isaac Rosenbaum said.
Rabbi Isaac Rosenbaum said he believes he can lure several hundred more families - enough to fill the entire school.
Rivky Gross, 23, said she and husband Abraham, 21, have already picked out their dream home - a four-unit apartment building with a ground floor storefront.
That building will cost her $130,000, said Backus. "If I know there's going to be a Jewish settlement and they'll have everything we need, that's all I need to go there," said Rivky Gross, who currently rents an apartment in Williamsburg. "A lot of people are looking."
Luzi Friedman, whose family lives in Williamsburg, moved to Scranton last August. He plans to open a shoe store with the money he's saved on cheap lunches and cheaper parking. "I actually have a friend who moved in yesterday from Brooklyn - another city guy," said Friedman, 32. "There are plenty of Jews here, but I'm the first so far to walk around with a shtrimel."

This is one of the smartest things orthodox jews can do, remove themseleves from the Brooklyn jewish ghetto where one will take advantage, unfortunately, of the next. I wish much hatzlacha to those ventuting out to Scranton. May this trend of busting up these ghettos continue. As it states, Uforatzta yama v'kaidma tzofoina v'negba!!!!!!!!

I was there for a visit, it’s very nice indeed, however what will the oilem do for parnusah? I spoke to local goyim and they told me the pay is approximately $7 per hour. While I feel its a very good idea if it works out, it still wont be complete only if we all wizen up and spend less on all the moisres that we continue to spend on. We can all live there even while earning less, but a prerequisite is that we spend less.

the school is in SCRANTON PA
If only we can really get this going it would be the best thing that can happen
for the guy who says parnassah
well here is my answer
first even if you make less your cost of living is lesser - can you imagine not having to pay 1800 rent a month ? how much less do you have to make a hour just on the rent savings -
taxes are less -
there is no need for a bungalow in the summer ( 6000-10,000) a year in savings
no need for summer camps for the kids
i can go on and on how much less you would need to live -
now lets take your apt.what do you have now 1200-1500 sq ft
well there you would have over 2800 + a front and backyard and a driveway that you will have to look for parking again
so you tell me which one is better
brooklyn - where you live like a sardine
or scranton pa
good luck in your choice

Yiddelech need the country even if they live in the country and they need csmps. They will just be outsourcing the Brooklyn mentality as we have done to other jewish communities.

The article reads NY but it must be PA.

The article in the daily news says its in western NY it quotes the mayor of the city and if you google his name you will find he is the mayor of sranton. Its a great city i went to yeshiva there. the jewish community dates back to the early 1900s

exactly what my point was.
Its very unfortunate that we keep on finding additional items to splurge on. An example would be clothing for children. If B”H you have a few children, you know the conversation that you have with your wife about buying such a cuuuttttteeeee shabbos robe for the children for only $90 each when many stores sell cute ones for only $30. If you multiply that then add such a cute shoe that all of your friends children have….., at a simche everyone is invited just for the meal… I can go on and on. Thats why my point said that it’s a great idea even while earning less with a prerequisite to slash on all the moisres. By not spending on country and taxes we will find new musts. If you have a child that you are marrying off you would understand it so much better, try to arrange all of the shevah bruchoises.
We have a tendency to constantly find “must haves or dos” while everyone has these tendencies, we are forced to follow everyone like sheep.

Scranton, Pa. has a wonderful, warm, caring Jewish community. It can use a GOOD kosher butcher, bakery and restaurant such as a pizza place. There are also excellent doctors. With all the families coming in I wish them hatzlachah. It is a great place to raise children. There are no taxes on clothing and plenty of outlets.
