Montreal, Canada - Man Removed From Airplane for Praying

Montreal, Canada - Some fellow passengers are questioning why an Orthodox Jewish man was removed from an Air Canada Jazz flight from Montreal to New York City for praying.

The airplane was heading towards the runway at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport when eyewitnesses said the Orthodox man began to pray.  "He was clearly a Hasidic Jew," said Yves Faguy, a passenger seated nearby. "He had some sort of cover over his head. He was reading from a book. "He wasn't exactly praying out loud but he was lurching back and forth," Faguy added.

The action didn't seem to bother anyone, Faguy said, but a flight attendant approached the man and told him his praying was making other passengers nervous. "The attendant actually recognized out loud that he wasn't a Muslim and that she was sorry for the situation but they had to ask him to leave," Faguy said.

The man, who spoke neither English nor French, was escorted off the airplane.

Air Canada Jazz termed the situation "delicate," but says it received more than one complaint about the man's behaviour.
The crew had to act in the interest of the majority of passengers, said Jazz spokeswoman Manon Stewart. "The passenger did not speak English or French, so we really had no choice but to return to the gate to secure a translator," she said.

I once sat across the aisle from a real yeshivishe guy who was learning or davening the whole trip. The disturbing part was that he was "shukeling" so hard I could practically feel the plane shaking. I'm still surprised that noone threw him off the plane.

This has nothing to do with self hate.
jews make up 1% of the worlds population.
at least a third (34%) hate jews violently.
    why not be subtle?
why not make a kiddush hashem?

We never learn - am k'shei oref - a real blessing and a curse.

It's true, the fella could have easily davened in a private corner or in a phone booth (remember those days when people were a little more subtle?).

The simple fact is we really never learn from history - in Goshen we were described as "v'hayu m'tzuyanim sham" and where did it get us? In pre-Third Reich Germany, we were the cream of the crop as far as German citizens were concerned and where did it get us? And now, on an Air Canada flight? Perhaps we should stop trying to make ourselves at home outside of our G-d given homeland.

I fly often and it's an absolute chutzpah for the yidden on a (non-El-Al) plane to brazenly get up to daven; sometimes to actually get in the way of the flight crew and other passengers - frankly it stinks of chilul haShem.

Chodesh Elul or not, my friends, bein adom l'chaveiro also means that we should take into account the people around us on an airplane - and, to the average traveler, a shokling yid is easily mistaken for a fanatic Islamic or vice versa. (Did you ever picture bin Laden with payos and a streimel? I swear he could pass for one of the chevre in Williamsburg

    Dear Aseh L'cha Rav

As far as I'm concerned, your comment "stinks" from Anti-Semitism, from within!

Firstly, this fella hasn't been standing at all(if you read the article again)

Secondly, what does davening with Chutzpa have in common? let's see, should it be a Christian or a Catholic praying nicely on a plan, in a corner, everybody would go, wow, he's really devoted to G-D, all our fellow US citizensm would've admired him, & because it's a jew, he stinks???

All people (incld. self hating within) who are having a problem with someone(a JEW) who's praying to G-D, "STINKS"

I am a Chadisishe Yungerman from Williamsburg. I hate to see so many heimish people make a Chulel HaShem. And that includes air travelers.

I have traveled intensely over the past two years for business, both, domestic and abroad. I always daven before boarding any flight in my hotel or local synogauge if I can find one. However, I keep a small Tehilim and Chok LeYisroel in my carry on. I “Always” say some prayers on the plane while the plane is taking off. I am a very nervous traveler and saying some Tehilim calms me down. Never had any complaints about it. OK… There was a lady sitting next to me once who after I finished praying wanted to understand “what” I prayed, and all kinds of religious questions. But nobody was ever bothered by it.

Now don’t tell me I make a Chillul Hashem! I never beg fellow travelers to change seats with me. I take my designated seat and sit down as soon as I board. I don’t get up every 5 minutes to wash negel vaser, etc.

So here you go. There is a fine line between saying prayers on a plane and disturbing your fellow passengers. Don’t you understand? This crew member who asked the guy to leave did not feel threatened one bit. What did she think? He will blow up the plane? I promise you if this would have been a Muslim spreading his prayer rug in the aisle, nobody would have said a word… She wanted to show that they are strict to everyone, not just terrorist! And in the process she was happy to screw a Jew!

This stinks of Anti Semitism! Since when can’t you say a prayer on a plane in the Western civilized world? Come on… We are not talking Negal Vaser here or ten people gathering in the back of the plane to make a Minyan here! We are also not talking about opening your tuna sandwich your wife made you 8 hours ago and it smells to high heavens. We are talking about saying some prayers!

How are you so sure? You self hating jews don't relize that some anti semites jump on a opportunity to make trobule for a Jew.

No... I am not saying we are all perfect. We have to realize that there is a problem in the Heimishe comunity. We don't always behave in public.

But... HaVey Don Es Kol HuUdem Lekaf Zechus. This is not a chassidus.

Who knows what really happened on the that plane. I am sure it was probably a little of both; the guy was probably shukkling a bit too much and the other travelers & flight crew were on the anti-semitic side. I hope the guy learned his lesson, and be a little more subtle about the way he goes about his davening on a plane. Too bad he can't read English....all the good advice on this blog for waste.

This was an attack on Judaism, pure and simple. As such, it was an attack on all Jews. A Hasid is obviously recognizable as Jewish; and that attracts the hatred of the goyim. The "french Canadians" are a wanna-be "people" and define themselves in opposition to others. A true Nation, AM YISRAEL, prevokes great jealousy in these hateful frenchies.

please, please gentelman there is many ways u can express ur opinion as long as it is to the issue.

the facts r "he did not bother me" said the passenger sitting next to this "JEWISH" person praying.

what problem was it for the crew of the airline?, none, pure hate for someone praying.

not only should this person SUE the airline, but, so sould the other passengrs who were delayed for appointments back in the states.

also, thier should be a background check on the crew 2 c where they r from, mybe they belong to a hate colt.

meanwhile, the Jewish comunity should avoid flying with this airline at all costs.

It was an excuse to start up with a Jew. If he wouldn't have been shuckling, maybe they would have looked for something else to harrass him with.
