Thompson, NY - Bungalow Ban Casuese Huge Stir
Thompson, NY - Earlier this week, the Town imposed a six-month ban on building in bungalow colonies. And the news is spreading like wildfire in the Hasidic and ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities downstate, appearing in Yiddish papers in Brooklyn. And Supervisor Tony Cellini has been inundated with calls.
The town is considering zoning changes that will effectively ban the building of seasonal homes and new bungalow colonies. Rabbi Abraham Spira said the community is watching the move closely. "There is a suspicion there is a bias," said Spira, who is serving as a spokesman for many of the bungalow colonies.
"If it is a normal recommendation required to achieve safety, it will not be viewed as bias. If it goes way far out as to what the surrounding towns are doing, then it could easily be viewed as bias. It will be challenged also, in every angle and possible way."
Spira also said that many bungalow owners don't understand why the town imposed the ban now, at the beginning of construction season.
It basically means nobody will be allowed to improve or add onto bungalows this year.
