New York, NY Man Dies After Assault
Washington Heights, NY - An 81-year-old man who was assaulted in his own building during a robbery died from his injuries on Friday.
The man Jacob Gerstle, was attacked on Wednesday just after returning home from a synagogue to his Washington Heights apartment building. A much larger man snuck up behind him, put something over his face and forced him into his apartment, once inside, the robber assaulted the 81-year-old and stole his wallet and cell phone.
The victim was said to be 5 feet 2 inches tall. Police described his attacker as a black man, 20 to 30 years old and 180 to 200 pounds.
The suspect was wearing a camouflage jacket and jeans during the incident. A surveillance camera captured the attacker following the victim into the building and onto the elevator, and it then shows him leaving the building.
Police said a $12,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case.

I live in Washington Heights. Mr. Gerstle was assaulted in the elevator by a man who boarded with him (not in his apartment).
Mr. Gerstle was the head of the Chevra Kadisha and a TREMENDOUS baal chessed. He singlehandedly organized and ran a food pantry for needy neighborhood families.
The levayo will be Sunday at noon on Bennett Avenue in front of Khal Adath Jeshurun (Breuer's).

It means the man boarded the eleveator together with the niftar, and the assault took place in the elevator not in his apartment.

This is truly sad! This man was a tzadik! The biggest bal chesed around! Even the non-Jews in the building were raving what a nice man he was! I hope they catch the animal who did it to him and put him away for life!! Boruch Dayan Emes.

As per Mr. Gerstle's grandson Y59 a member of hatzolah he told me that he had $500.00 on him and the bag was not put over his head the bag he was holding was a paper bag that he showed me he was such a great man Rav perlow and alot of other great rabbanim were with the family when he was nifter this was a shock for eveyone as rav Perlow said who is a close freind to the family some things we are just not meant to understand in life.
