New York - Thruway To Get Announces Dynamic Message Signs
New York - In an effort to give more timely information to motorists traveling along the New York State Thruway, the Thruway Authority announced that it has invested approximately $340,000 on an additional 10 portable Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) that have been installed at strategic locations. This initiative was expedited to accommodate the heavy flow of traffic that is customary during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. These new DMS sites have the potential to impact an additional 330,000 motorists daily.
"Our customers have asked for more timely and accurate information regarding incidents that impact traffic and this plan will help to accomplish just that," said Thruway Authority Executive Director. "This initiative includes the installation of permanent DMS at these locations allowing the Authority to provide customers with traffic information at a time and location in which they can make informed travel decisions."
Upon installation of the permanent signs, the portable signs will be re-commissioned to the next sites chosen as "customer critical" decision points, allowing even more Thruway customers to make necessary travel choices with better information.
The additional signs complement the Authority's 43 permanent and 27 portable DMS that are currently available to communicate directly with travelers on the highway. Each of these locations will provide motorists on heavily traveled sections with pertinent information prior to a major interchange, so that customers can decide to either exit or remain on the system, depending on the conditions.
