NANUET — A man who bought a car with forged financial documents led police on a 45-minute, high-speed car chase this morning through Clarkstown, Orangetown and into New Jersey, police said.

A man was taken into custody in Fort Lee, N.J., after a chase that started at a car dealership on Route 304 in Nanuet.

Police were chasing a man driving a 2006 black Chrysler who bought the $46,305 car Friday using forged financial documents, Clarkstown Detective Gerard King said this morning.

Clarkstown police were waiting for him at the Chrysler dealership at 9 a.m. today on Route 304. He was returning to get the car registration.

"We're were sitting there waiting for him to show up," King said. "We had him boxed in at the Chrysler dealership. He decided he didn't want to surrender."

He almost hit one officer, who jumped out of the way, and rammed a police car side door, King said.

Clarkstown police drove after him but stopped because the high speed chase could endangered the public.

"It was a stolen car," King said. "Orangetown then picked up on the chase and stopped for same reason as we did — the public's safety."

The driver then went into New Jersey and police in that state started chasing him.

Fort Lee police captured the driver after a foot chase, King said.

No more details were available as of 9:45 a.m.
