West Nyack, NY - ShopRite on Route 59 Sinking

West Nyack, NY - A ShopRite store on Route 59, west of Route 303, that has been sinking since it opened three years ago wants to tear down part of the store and rebuild it on more solid ground.
The owners want Clarkstown's permission to remove the sinking portion of the store, then add a new section closer to the highway, on top of ground that apparently is more stable.

The town issued a certificate of occupancy for the 61,000 square feet store in July 2003, and it has been sinking ever since.
Beary said the public was safe because his department made Inserra conduct regular checks.

A few years ago, the shopping mall across the street from ShopRite was the focus of conversation as shoppers worried it, too, was sinking.
Cracks started showing up at the Palisades Center in 1999, and the structure appeared to be sinking because its parking lot pavement pulled away from the mall's pillars.
It turned out the mall was not sinking. Unlike the ShopRite store, the mall's structures were built on pilings that had been driven down to bedrock.
The parking lots, however, were built on about 60 feet of uncompacted peat moss, Beary said, and they settled significantly.
