2 Detained After Fight on JetBlue Flight

    The Associated Press

    NEW YORK —

Police took at least two people into custody early Sunday after a fight broke out in the first minutes of a flight to Puerto Rico, causing the plane to be diverted to John F. Kennedy Airport, officials said.

Port Authority police were holding two people who had apparently been involved in a fistfight and were to turn them over to the FBI, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the region's airports.

A spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration said an additional person was involved. One woman was arrested and two women were being interviewed following the incident on JetBlue Flight 561, said the spokesman, Norm Brewer.

Airline spokeswoman Jenny Dervin confirmed that three passengers were taken off the plane.

The flight took off from Newark, N.J., at 12:01 a.m. Sunday and landed at JFK about an hour later, Dervin said. The plane, carrying the remaining 147 passengers and six crew members, resumed its trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, at 1:50 a.m., she said.

The identities of those in custody were not immediately available, and it was unclear what charges would be filed.

Messages left at local FBI offices early Sunday were not immediately returned.
