Fast-moving fire damages Spring Valley homes

Firefighters from four departments are fighting a blaze that whipped through a two-family house on Youmans Drive in Spring Valley today.

The fire started in the kitchen of 14 Youmans Drive and spread to 16 Youmans, an attached house next door.
No injuries were reported in the fire, which broke out shortly after noon.

    The cause remains under investigation.
Spring Valley Fire Chief Scott Maia said that two or three people were evacuated from 14 Youmans and that the neighboring house was empty.

Portions of Youmans Drive remained close at 1 p.m.

SPRING VALLEY — Two Youmans Drive families were displaced yesterday afternoon after a fire tore through a multi-family home, destroying both homes.

The fast-moving fire began in the kitchen of 14 Youmans Drive and spread to 16, which is attached, said Spring Valley Fire Chief Scott Maia.

The fire spread quickly and firefighters from four departments — Spring Valley, Hillcrest, South Spring Valley and Monsey — took turns battling the blaze in the mid-summer heat.

Many cooled off by dousing themselves with bottled water and stood by a box fan that was set up at the base of the home's driveway.

No one was injured in the 12:01 p.m. fire, but some firefighters suffered from heat exhaustion and minor burns and were treated at the scene by Rockland Paramedics and Spring Hill Ambulance Corps.

"We had to rotate the guys out," Maia said. "The heat makes battling the fire a lot harder. You got the heat from the fire and outside; put it all together and it puts a beating on the firemen."

No one was home at 16 Youmans Drive, but Elena Droznik of 14 Youmans Drive managed to escape by the time firefighters arrived, three minutes after the call was placed, Maia said. A total of nine children lived in the two homes.

He added that the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Spring Valley Sgt. Jim Hoenniger said police were still figuring out who lived in the homes, but knew that one family had five children and the other had four.

Neighbors gathered behind a roped-off portion of the street as firefighters vented the building by knocking out windows and portions of the roof.

Shaindy Glatzer and her sister, Frimy Liebowitz, who live down the street, said they saw smoke billowing from the home.

"We saw smoke coming out of the front door," said Liebowitz. "It was just more and more heavy clouds."

Glatzer said she and her sister went down the street to make sure neighboring homes were also evacuated.

"This is a very close community," she said. "We all ran out to make sure no one was in the house."

Salomi Benjamin, who lives on Union Road, said he smelled a tire burning and came to see what had happened.

"It looks like everything is burned up," he said, standing across the street from the burning home.

Rockland County Fire Coordinator and Hillcrest volunteer firefighter Gordon Wren Jr. said two teams of firefighters entered the home through the front doors, but the group headed into 14 was forced out by the smoke and flames.

"They regrouped and went right back in and got the fire," he said. "They just showed tremendous courage and training."

Walter Booker, Spring Valley's assistant building inspector, said after a brief examination the house was rendered uninhabitable by the fire.

"It's better to just knock it down," he said.

Erica Corbett, who lives on Union Road, said she saw a lot of smoke when she got to the scene.

"It was bad. There was a lot of black smoke," she said as she stood with family. "Thank God no one was injured. As long as they got out safe, it don't matter how the house is. As long as everyone is safe and healthy."
