Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY - NYPD Officer From The 90th Pct Arrested for Shooting At Friends Door

Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY - A NYPD off-duty officer assigned to the 90th Precinct in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, was arrested on charges of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment following the incident.

The officer a two-year veteran fired 11 bullets into the door of his friends apartment while the woman and her two children were inside, he was still there when cops arrived, sources said. Officers took the young cop to St. Vincent's Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
No one was hurt when Officer Joel Rodriguez fired off the barrage of shots on the 10th floor of the building on Kent Avenue in Williamsburg just after midnight, as was reported at that time on VOS IZ NEIAS.
Rodriguez, 26, and the woman, had been arguing all day - via text messages - before he stormed the apartment, sources said. The door is made of metal and it was not clear if any of the bullets penetrated. Most of the shots appeared to be aimed at the lock.

A Brooklyn cop peppered his girlfiend's apartment door with 11 shots because he'd caught her with another man, the crazed officer told police.
"I caught my girlfriend cheating on me and I let some rounds go," Joel Rodriguez, 26, said when officers arrived at his ex's Williamsburg apartment building early Sunday morning.

"Take my gun," the second-year, 90th Precinct police officer said, raising his hands in the air, his NYPD shield and ID clutched in one fist.

Rodriguez showed up at Elizabeth Ortiz's door shortly after midnight Sunday and "lost it" when he heard another man's voice inside the 450 Kent Ave. apartment, source said.

"If he's a man, he'd come out and talk to me!" Rodriguez shouted as he pounded on Ortiz's door, prosecutor Wilfredo Cotto said yesterday at the cop's arraignment.

Rodriguez fired his 9-mm. service revolver into the door as he tried to shoot out the lock of Ortiz's 10th-floor apartment.

Ortiz, 27, her friend and 7-year-old daughter hid in a back room, authorities and friends said.

"If he had gained access, who knows what he would have done," said community activist Isaac Abraham, 55, who spoke to Ortiz. "She's holding up very well."

None of the bullets penetrated the steel door but one ricocheted and hit Rodriguez in the arm.

A police source said Ortiz had called Rodriguez earlier for help finding her car, which had been towed, a police source said.

The two spoke between 10 and 15 times between 1 p.m. and about 7:30 p.m., a source said. When Rodriguez got off work, he showed up at her door.

Rodriguez was arraigned yesterday on charges of menacing, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and weapons possession - charges that could land the cop behind bars for 15 years. He was released on $10,000 bond.

Rodriguez's lawyer, Javier Solano, declined comment.
