New York, NY +Hasidic With Degree From Seminary in KJ Monroe "Wasn't" Hired By The NYPD

New York, NY - A Hasidic boy from Brooklyn with a Degree From Kiryas Joel Seminary in Monroe, NY wasn't hired as part of the NYPD's newest class of recruits, he had been passed over authorities said.

Joel Witriol, 24, was four credits shy of meeting the NYPD's requirement of 60 college credits, and was not part of the latest class of 1,560 recruits.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Witriol could reapply if he fulfills the education requirement.
Witriol learned yesterday that he had been passed over, authorities said. He could not be reached for comment.

Police officials said it was not unusual, given the volume of applicants, that candidates are told at the last minute whether they should report for the recruits' first day.

Knowing someone else who was supposed to be a NYPD officer but was "passed over," I am wondering if they have a problem hiring frum Yiddin.

Now that I said that, personally I am not a "fan" of a yid especially a frum one becoming a cop. I think there is far too much "not good" than "good" that could come from that.

I do wish him nothing but hatzlocha in finding something that he could do for parnossa.

Funny how we always come up with ideas like, oh because hes a jew or chassidish. stop thinking the world owes you all, you have to have 60 credits and the boy came up with the credits a little to late in the game waiting for the next class is not such a bad idea.
oh and regarding a frum jew becoming a police officer, the best thing that can happen it might have a great impact on the greater communitty and the police dept.

wait till the licensing board finds out what his "credits" at kiryas joel seminary actually consist of. i'm pretty sure that when the police department decided 60 college credits were necessary, they meant for things like english, math, science, history, etc.--not "advanced talmudic learning," or whatever other nonsense they give degrees out for there.

I would not be shocked if we find out that he himself was pressured to give up this "Brainstorm".

2 credits shy? hardly an excuse. Sounds like the nanny excuse.

If hasidic women can't drive or go to college, how can they join the force? (At least they can shave their head.)

Looking at what element of kollel yungerliet attract these days i feel they should have similiar requirements to enter KOLLEL.
And no off time if your chavrusa does not show up.

If you fail you go to work or become a section 8 recipient.

I guess the BS degree from KJ University is not good enough.

At least now he can apply to KJ village security now that legislation is in the works to give them RED lights and sirens.
Then he can patrol all the boys supposedly "learning mostly religious stuff" as quoted by said yukel to news reporters ion what he has a degree in.
Glad he didn't make it, would've been a disaster.

I'm a religious girl, although probably I'd be labeled "Modern Orthodox." I'm really surprised at some of the rude comments on this blog. I hope that things work out for this guy if this is what he wants to do. I don't see anything wrong with someone who wants to do good and this seems like a regular guy who is looking for a fulfilling job while at the same time making a kiddush hashem and possibly being of help to his community. You guys make fun of these kollels, but then again, would you let your daughters go out with someone who went to a real college? And how is someone being a cop any worse than someone who is a businessman yet cheats on his taxes or acts inappropriately with women on the job.

Hey anony-miss, modern-orthodox, would you date a jewish police man and a guy like that shows up at your door. What would your reaction be then? It would be rejection!
    Get it?

people be careful with how you talk. do you want to be responsible for a big chillul hashem? after 120 everyone has to be for their words and actions and no one knows who comes onto this blog. Anyone that reads this can get very turned off how jewish brothers and sisters talk to each other.

No one is getting turned off of how we talk. Period.
This is not talk. This is a blog!!!
    A blog is like email.
Email is not real conversation since it lacks emotions (for most users anyway).
Professionals who use email and/or blogs know that to make your point clear, you must not only spell correctly, but also use proper punctations to have the effect you want to impart.
No half-baked educated person would judge a person or a nationality and religion as a whole from reading blogs.
