Two crashes, one dead, in Sullivan

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office responded to serious back to back motor vehicle accidents in the Town of Thompson last night. One was fatal.

At about 11 p.m., an accident occurred on the Glen Wild Road, just up from the Rock Hill Firehouse. A vehicle driven by Moshe Minz, 21, of Brooklyn NY was traveling north on the Glen Wild Road when it left the pavement and overturned.

A passenger, Sara Horowitz, 50, was taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. Her husband, Berisch Horowitz, 58, was taken by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center.

About 20 minutes earlier, deputies answered a 911 call of a pedestrian who was struck by a minivan on State Route 42 near Lake Kiamesha. The pedestrian, Keith Cardone, 18, of Fraser Road was walking with traffic, westbound on State Route 42 when a minivan, driven by Pamela Davis of Monticello struck him. Cardone suffered a head injury and was flown by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center where his condition is currently unknown.

    to yiddish mamma

dont be choished accuse a person of doing something wrong like talking on his cell unless you know for sure. during such a tragedy we need to be carfull to accuse the driver of that. unless you knwo that for a fact

yes everyone should be more carefull now especially in the nine days.
    be aware of your surroundings
drive slower these road do not have lights at night like in the city.
wear seatbelts (were the passengers wearing them even in the back seat)
dont use brights unless there is no other car comming this blinds the driver and may cause an accident
dont drive if you are tired

and there are many more safty rules to follow

Dont be so fast to point fingers.

Do you really think that someone driving the Spinke Rebbe and his wife will be driving like a lunatic. I know the person who drove that car. Believe me, he's a good, quiet, responsible person. Its called an accident for a reason. A car can flip at 30mph the same way it can flip at 90..

Granted, there are alot of idiot drivers out there (mostly women who can barely see over the dashboard of their minivan) but alot of people do drive crazy, upstate and in brooklyn. I am willing to bet my house that this was not the case over here. I want you to meet Moshe Minz and then tell me how you think he was driving. He is a very good and very responsible person who probably had both hands on the wheel.

Dont be so fast to judge, unless you want others to judge you the same way.

As a female driver who does a lot of walking I am insulted by the above comments. Bottom line: WEAR REFLECTIVE CLOTHING!!!So many times the most careful driver cannot see a dark figure at night. Also, as a driver slow down and get off the damned cell phone if you are on one. If you are coming up on a turn, SLOW DOWN! Taking precautions comes first, leaving the rest up to Hashem comes next.

  • At 1:49 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

But who told you that driving someone and the person gets killed because you went into a ditch, falls under the category of golus???

I was once at a shiur where the ruv specifically said that in most circumstances, it isn't considered a shogeg but an oines. Understood.

BTW, we all agree about the cellphones but you implied by stating that "Let me see: 21 year old driving on the curvey Glenn Hill road, late at night, probably talking on his cell = DEATH!", he was talking on a cell. You wrote this w/o knowing if it was true and that is why everyone is complaining to you.

My whole life I have never heard of a Rebbe being involved in a car accident. In the past few days we have had two car accidents with a Rebbe in the car. I believe that there is some message that we need to learn here. I am not that learned myself so I will not attempt to post a reason.

One thing that is blatant on this blog is the amount of loshon horoh being said. Let's not generalize Brooklyn people or women drivers or discuss individuals. I would reccomend that the owner of this blog send out a daily email with halochos of speaking loshon horoh.

Our jewish brothers and sisters are getting killed and injured every hour by the hour, its raining rockets..."uru yesheinim mishischem". as long as we have our air-conditioned shiny mini-vans, every thing is fine......
how long more, will the rabbonim have their mouths ZIPPED-UP.
I think, we dont know how to react anymore, we are numb, to what our are eyes are seeing, just read the torah, everything was written there by our leader moshe, must have been hashem told him all of this, what is happening today. we dont know where we are going or coming, the wife says, u need nine weeks of country, u say yes. what can we do, say no? why do have to be on the road in traffic so many hours, and sleep in the city like slaves. when u open a tehillim, u say the words like a robot, no feelings, no relationship with hashem. all theses events are not mikrah, it happens once, happens twice. how many rebbes and tzaddikim have to be taken away in one year, for us to get the message. rabosai some crazy things are happening here, so for u to open ur eyes.

The nine days are here, we ALL need rachmei shomayim. ALL of us: litvishe, chasidishe, rebbes, rabonim, men, ladies, children, married children. What's the difference how we dress or who we are; we are all bonim LMakom, and we all need rachmonus for every step of the way not only in the nine days, but every day. Remember, you leave the house, you come home; it's a nes. Period, end story.

Thank the Aibishter, daven, daven, daven, tehillim mit treren (as R' Matisyahu Solomon most recently said). Most of all, we have to work on our Achdus. Let all yidden love each other; doesnt' matter what kind of yid; a yid is a yid; period. End the machlokesen with who is Rebbe, where. Achdus! that's what we need now. I am sure, I have no doubt, that Mr. Minz was a good person. Listen people: How many of you drive? This was a basherte maysa. Can't you see. He could have been driving slowly, or a little too fast. Doesn't matter. A pot hole can make shrekliche tzures. I saw a person go into a pothole (normal speed) and have a blowout!
But.........we have to do our part; not talk on the cell, wear reflectors, (I almost hit a Vishnitzer Yungerman who walked literraly in front of my car, what a nes, I turned my car around and followed him. I asked him, whereis your reflector? He said I rolled up my sleeve, you didn't see it? It's white? No. I didn't. I asked him you have a wife and kids, he says yes, Boruch Hashem. I said well I have 16 children B'A.hora. Do you think I could live with myself if I would have cholilah hurt you? Who would raise my kids, if I would cholilah crack up from an accident like this. He was very apologetic.
People out there: Use reflectors. Use reflectors. I don't care where you are and I don't care when, use them. How many times do we have to beg you walkers to use relectors.
As far as what happened to Reb B. Spinker. May Hakodosh Boruch Hu be menachem him. What can we say?

I think you have to be ... two-faced about the accident.

In regards to thinking about the driver, you have to assume that he was not negligent. There are LOTS of ways an accident like this could have happened, without fault of the driver. There are lots of ways it could have happened WITH the fault of the driver.

But in thinking about the situation, in general, we have to admit that there are MANY, MANY careless Jewish (and non-Jewish) drivers out there, doing exactly what Y.M. suggested. Each person should look into THEMSELVES and see if there are character traits (of which bad driving habits are just one) that need rectification. THAT is the only meaningful way we can comfort the Spinka Rebbe, he should live and be well.

Perhaps, a traffic safety initiative in her memory? Ad Mosai!

From what I hear Moshe the driver had the opportunity to take the rebbe during the summer to treatments for his illness. This was not his first time doing this. He did this strictly for the mitzvah, because thats the type of person he is. Helping people is in his blood. I feel soooo bad for him that he has to have this on his shoulder. I really wish him all the best, and hope he can go on in life without this having a major effect on him.

My heart goes out to the rebbe also. His wife was not supposed to be there, she decided this particular trip to go along with the rebbe, from what I hear she doesnt usualy do this (dont quote me on that but someone told me this who spoke with the driver).

    To the blogger DAVE

I dont believe g-d sends messages like this. If g-d would send a message by taking someones life than I would renounce my jewish faith. Though I do belive that it was her time to go. As sad as it may be.

This was a terrible accident that we can all learn alot from. Its really nice to see that everyone here except for one who dont know Moshe give him the benefit of the doubt, given the magnitude of this accident and given that a Gadol and his wife were involved.

I pray for all the best for everyone that was hurt in anyway from this accident and im sure it goes way beyond the people in the car.

Please stay safe out there! Everyday I get a bunch of VOS IZ NEIAS emais, I almost want to take myself off this mailing because there is so much sadness in so many of them. Seems like every other day theres a MVA.

Here is a quick statistic from 2003 since I couldnt find 04' or 05' (read this DAVE)

In 2003 there were 6,328,000 car accidents in the US. There were 2.9 million injuries and 42,643 people were killed in auto accidents.

(that would be alot of messages g-d is trying to send)

Please lets try to go at least 9 days without a baruch dayaan ha'emes update.

all of you who are saying that we have to be more careful on the roads are most definitely right.
most importantly though is our being careful on the road in life. we are all aware of the inyan of Derech Eretz. this inyan refers to respect of all people. if we are looking for soemthing to take upon ourselves, Derech eretz just may be worth it-especially on this site.
i realize from the disgusting comments and language that having respect for others on this site is extremely difficult for most of the users. this causes a horrible chilul Hashem and is an area worth improving.

What is the story behind the H member that was pulled

Im glad someone else made the point before me, but from those on the scene, had she worn a seatbelt, then "Bderech Hatevah" she would be alive.

Of course everything is bashert, but this shows the importance of wearing a seat belt even in the back.

She was thrown from the vehicle, and then crushed.

You're going from bad to worse!
I guess group character assassination is a natural progression from individual character assassination.
I highly doubt that you are really a Yiddishe Mamma. In fact I am pretty sure you are not.
I just can’t fathom one with such blatant Sinas Chinum.
Hopefully you will reflect on YOUR character during these 9 days and realize that you long ago veered off the right road.

Listen guys stop being such babies and stop the fighting and name-calling. This started off as a post about a tragedy and went totally off tangent..all everyone cares about now is bashing this y.m. If she said inappropriate comments does that give everyone else an excuse to go on and on abuot it and say less than desirable things..

    Mama,

Thanks for proving me right about one thing: There's no anti-semite like a jewish anti-semite.

Dave, do ALL the passengers in your car (if you have one) always wear seat belts? Or, if you enter someone else's car, do you ALWAYS wear seat belts? And what difference does it make whether he was the legal driver of this vehicle or not?

I think the point about the seatbelt is really the key one here. I've been driving for more than 15 years, and, to respond to anonymous at 2:50 PM, I DO make sure that everyone in the car is wearing one before I go, even in the back. I also will make sure to put on a seatbelt myself when getting a ride with someone else, even in a taxi. It would not be a bad thing if someone could start some project L'iluy Nishmas the Rebbitzin A"H to encourage seatbelt wearing - we in the Heimishe community are no more immune to the law, especially the laws of physics, than the rest of the population!

as far as i was told frome several units at scene is that the fatality had fallen out of the car and was partially crushed, but the other occupents weren't hurt at all. the car wasn't rolled over; it was only in a ditch. the reason of transp. the spinka rebbe was because he's a ca pt. on treatments and as known that elevates the bp and besides other conditions. so he in other words is for sure not a candidate for CRMC, but the other occupants weren't injured in the begining

    SEATBELTS SAVE LIVES

By the way, litvishe people are generally the opposite of farbisen. They can stomach alot more than the general chasidische, and accept Yidden with love, even if they don't have the same headgear they wear, because chitzonius is not as important as pnimius. And since most litvishe are lamdonim, and learn mussar, they work on themselves in this prat.
so, farbissen, is something Yiddishe Mame is probably not; she's just fed up with the hockers, and knockers and know it alls, and chutzpanikes, that drive like they own the road. That's all.

Yiddishe Mame, is just a human being, probably a very nice person, who is good and oifgerekt, 'cause she sees people without reflectors, without seatbelts, cutting off others, honking at all hours, cursing like the biggest mechutzfim out there and that's why she came accross the way she did. I will be her/him dan lekaf zechus, and all you people out there who don't wear seatbelts, who dont believe in reflectors because nothing will ever happen, should be aware that you are oiver on Venishmarten Meod Lenafshoseichem. Ze Hu!

I am just as an anti-semite as the police officer who will PICK YOU OUT to ticket for...............

"Now calm down! I have not said nothing! Why do you need to be so offensive?"

    Mama,

You need to get a better grip on reality. If anyone has been offensive here it is the person in your mirror.

I am Modern Orthodox of Litvish/Galitzyaner extraction. One would not find much Hungarian/Chasiddish blood in these veins. Yet I was deeply offended by your postings on this subject.

Personally, if hated traditional Jews so much that I could not control my urge to gleefully find opportunities to blame one of them for a tragedy in which he was a victim, not a perpetrator, all without having the slightest idea of the facts of the event, I would most certainly find a moniker which would could a less immediate and definite public affiliation with traditional Jews for myself.

IOW, if you hate frum people so much that when one of them losses a loved one in a tragic accident you can’t wait until you find out what the heck you are talking about before you accuse him of negligent manslaughter why don’t you find a screen name that fits better with the goy/goyta you sound like and you’d apparently would prefer to be.

There’s no hate greater than self-hate. It not only destroys the hated and the hater it can also destroy an entire nation and a Bait HaMikdash.
