Bentonville, AR - Wal-Mart Executive Resigns Amid Racist Remarks

Bentonville, AR - Civil rights leader Andrew Young, who was hired by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. as Chairman at to improve its public image, resigned from that post after telling an African-American newspaper that Jewish, Arab and Korean shop owners had "ripped off" urban communities for years, "selling us stale bread, and bad meat and wilted vegetables."

In an interview Young said Wal-Mart "should" displace mom-and-pop stores in urban neighborhoods. "You see those are the people who have been overcharging us," Young was quoted as saying of the small stores, "and they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they've ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it's Arabs."

Young, a former Atlanta mayor and U.S. ambassador to the U.N., apologized for the remarks and retracted them in an interview. Within an hour of the first interview, he resigned as chairman of Working Families for Wal-Mart, a group created and financed by the company to trumpet its accomplishments. He had been in the post for six months.

Lets see,,,it's ok for Walmart to pay minimum wage and put other folks out of business. But it's wrong for small stores to "rip off" other people by charging higher prices? Hey, this is America. If he has a better price let people make their choice but don't criticize.

What exactly does he mean by ripping off other people? Are store owners charging $4 a box of cereal because they made a decision to rip off customers? Or are they doing it to cover their rent?

What an idiot this Walmart guy is.

Andrew Young is of the same ilk as Jesse Jackson, Alton Maddox and Al Sharpton. Just plain trash, and with their hands in everyone's pockets at that.

Atlanta GA - Gov. Campaign Supports Andrew Young Campaign for Ga. governor candidate says no plans for Andrew Young to step down over remarks

Atlanta GA - The gubernatorial campaign of Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor said there were no plans for its co-chairman to step down despite remarks he made about Jews, Koreans and Arabs in an interview.
Taylor's camp said the comments were "regrettable" but insisted they should not eclipse the decades Andrew Young, a one-time associate of Martin Luther King Jr., has spent on the front lines in the civil rights struggle.

Young also is a former United Nations ambassador and Atlanta mayor.
"Ambassador Young has apologized and taken responsibility for what he said," said Taylor spokesman Rick Dent.
Young said he was stepping down from his job providing public relations help for Wal-Mart Stores Inc. The move came amid criticism for remarks published in the weekly Los Angeles Sentinel, which asked Taylor whether he was concerned Wal-Mart causes smaller, mom-and-pop stores to close.
"Well, I think they should; they ran the `mom and pop' stores out of my neighborhood," the paper quoted Young as saying. "But you see, those are the people who have been overcharging us, selling us stale bread and bad meat and wilted vegetables. And they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they've ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it's Arabs; very few black people own these stores."

A spokesman for Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue, who is running for re-election, said the remarks wouldn't be tolerated in his campaign.
"Mark Taylor might be all right with Andrew Young's disgraceful comments," Derrick Dickey said. "But I can tell you if anyone representing Sonny Perdue ever said something like that we'd tell them to step down immediately."

Young was one of Taylor's most visible supporters during his primary battle, appearing in a television ad and hitting the campaign trail with him. Taylor won the primary with strong support from the black community.
