Times Herald-Record building sealed after receiving suspicious package
Middletown — White powder arrived in an envelope in the accounting department at the Times Herald-Record this morning, sparking the kind of activity the newspaper usually covers, not experiences.
Flashing lights bounced off the walls of the newsroom where doors were closed as fire and Hazmat officials investigated the incident. The front entrance of the building is closed, but staff are able to come and go through side entrances.
Police and Hazmat officials talking outside said the envelope had no address on it but bore a Westchester postmark.
Times Herald-Record Executive Editor Mike Levine called staff together in the newsroom to tell them what happened. "Ninety nine times out of a hundred, it's just a prank," Levine told newsroom employees. "A lot of times people do that just to be mean, to hassle people."
He said he would keep people informed, and added, "If you are thinking about ordering out, they won't be able to get in."
Staff then went back to their daily stories, and waited until lunch could be delivered.
