Budapest - Holocaust Memorial May Face Demolition
Budapest - A holocaust memorial called "Wall of the True" erected in Budapest's District XII without the necessary official permission may be demolished.
The case offers a striking parallel with a statue of a bird (a turul; a favored symbol of Hungarian nationalists) also erected without permission in the same district, and which may be dismantled. The "Wall of the True" was completed in October 2005, one week before the turul statue.
A preliminary decision will be made in the case. The public body in charge of permitting such monuments will make its judgment based on aesthetic grounds, after it receives planning documents from the memorial's creators. If it declines again to issue a permit, the city will probably order the memorial to be demolished.
