London - Thousands March In Protest At Lebanon Violence
London - Thousansds of demonstrators - organisers said 100,000, police said 20,000 - marched through central London Saturday to protest the conflict in Lebanon and urge an immediate ceasefire.
A petition signed by thousands was handed in a Downing Street for perusal by Prime Minister Tony Blair, whom organisers accused of failing to act decisively in urging an immediate ceasefire.
'The British public is outraged by what's happening in Lebanon,' said Lindsey German of the Stop the War Coalition which organised the march.
Participants included MPs of Blair's Labour Party and a group of Orthodox Jews. The organisers asked demonstrators to leave children's shoes at the Cenotaph - London's main war memorial - in protest at the deaths of children in the conflict.
