New York - Kosher Agencies Train More Mashgichim to Meet Growing Demand

New York - The summer months seem to be an ideal time to train mashgichim (kosher supervisors) to serve the growing number of establishments that require kosher supervision. One seminar was recently held in Baltimore where 26 participants heard lectures from Star-K leaders, including Rabbi Moshe Heinemann, its rabbinic administrator and Dr. Avrom Pollak, its president.

In New York, 65 rabbis and rabbinical students are participating in the eighth ASKOU program, in which senior rabbis from the Orthodox Union Kosher (Kashrut) Division provide intensive instruction in the intricacies of certifying what food is kosher.
A mashgiach must not only be well versed in the complexities of Jewish law, but must also be familiar with rapidly changing food technology, manufacturing processes, chemistry, new products, ingredients, and other aspects of kosher certification.

The ASKOU program has now trained more than 500 mashgichim, many of whom occupy leading positions with kosher agencies across North America, in Israel and in Jewish communities around the world.
