Ramapo, NY - State Adjourns Hearing Against Yeshiva

Ramapo, NY - The state's Office of Children and Family Services has adjourned its administrative hearing against the developer of a yeshiva with adult student housing that was cited for running a preschool out of a trailer on the Grandview Avenue construction site, until the fall, when school is in session.

Brian Marchetti, a spokesman for the state agency, said the school run by Mosdos Chofetz Chaim would have to be open for the state to determine if it needs a state license. "The issue there is whether they require a license or whether they are exempt as a religious institution," he said. "Once they start in the fall, we can conduct an inquiry into their services."
The state had ordered the preschool shut in March, when it appeared the yeshiva was operating without a child-care license or registration. The developer has appealed.

The developer also is to appear before the town's Zoning Board of Appeals on Sept. 7 because of the town citation's for running the preschool without a certificate of occupancy.
The developer also is appealing the town's decision to increase the building permit fees for its 60-apartment yeshiva.
The 8 p.m. meeting will be at Town Hall, 237 Route 59, Airmont.
