Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY - Discount Bus Companies Tangle Over Territory

Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY - The number of competitors to Greyhound Lines with inexpensive fares has soared in recent years, in fact, in the booming world of discount travel, there is apparently no room for two Hasidic-owned companies on the same route.

A dispute between the two bus companies that are vying for riders from New York to Washington, Vamoose and Washington Deluxe, has landed in court. As a result, some customers have been confused in recent days by Vamoose’s Web site, which first said the company was temporarily out of business, then said it was running again, but with fewer stops.

Vamoose and Washington Deluxe are owned by competing Hasidic entrepreneurs from Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Washington Deluxe, which predates Vamoose by two years, obtained a settlement from a rabbinical court in 2004 prohibiting Vamoose from operating on the same New York-to-Washington routes.
The religious court’s ruling was upheld in June by Justice Lawrence S. Knipel of State Supreme Court in Brooklyn. Andrew Citron, a lawyer for Washington Deluxe, said he served Vamoose with legal papers resulting from the justice’s ruling in mid-August, leading to the company’s recent temporary shutdown.

The service disruption led to “scores of e-mails from customers who were extremely distressed,” said Florence Bluzenstein, the wife of Vamoose’s owner, Sam Bluzenstein. She said that the legal dispute with Washington Deluxe remains unresolved, but that Vamoose has satisfied the court rulings by discontinuing service inside Washington.
But a representative from Washington Deluxe said, that they believe that Vamoose is still violating the court’s order by offering service anywhere in the Washington metropolitan area.

Ther was obviously no conclusion here. Since both companies seem to still be in business. May be not both to washington any more, since vamoose has been put out of there.

maybe this article will help clarify what is going on a bit.
On Friday, Aug. 21, some budget-minded travelers looking forward to cheap weekend bus trips to New York City got some bad news. Patrons of Vamoose Bus, one of several bus services operating between D.C. and Gotham, received the following e-mail: “Due to an injunction against us by Washington Deluxe Bus company, we are suspending operations as of Aug. 22.”

The injunction, which prohibits Vamoose from operating in the District, was the result of several months of legal wrangling between the two companies. The conflict stemmed from the fact that a current Vamoose employee had once been employed by Washington Deluxe; the employee, according to Andrew Citron, the attorney representing Washington Deluxe, is prohibited from working for a competitor.

Vamoose has been operating since February 2004, and owner Sam Bluzenstein says that Deluxe just wants to put him out of business. “They're trying to avoid having competition,” said Bluzenstein, who has hired a new attorney to fight the ruling.

Bluzenstein offered refunds to customers who had their trips canceled, and on Aug. 28, Vamoose reinstated service, picking up and dropping off in Bethesda and Arlington instead of its former Chinatown and Tenleytown locations. Bluzenstein estimates that the change of locations has cut about half of his company's ridership.

Marisa Marchitelli, a former District resident who moved to New York three years ago and uses buses to go back-and-forth several times a year, was one of the more than 1,000 people who had made round-trip reservations with Vamoose and was forced to find another way home.

yeah maybe Deluxe should take all the Chineses to bes Din. Chinese have a history of killing and fighting on ther busses so deluxe should better watch it out.

The fight in Rabbinical Court was between a Vamoose employee that has been employed by Washington Deluxe. The Beth Din (Mishpat Sholom...) ruled that he’s not supposed to open up his own company, nor should he work for any other company operating between NY and DC, for the rest of his life.

The dispute is now in Appellate Court.

I also heard that the owner - Mr. Bluzenstein – wasn’t involved in the Beis Din litigation.

and the bes din did not hear that worker's side of the story

For the rest of his life he cannot work for any bus compan? any bus company anywhere? Huh? How could they give such a rulling. Did he kill the owner of the company? What kind of ruling is that.

    I guess that's the answer...

The Beth Din (Mishpat Sholom...)ruled that

what I don't understand here is--why cannot a worker who understands buses work for another bus company. How many times a year do we find that someone worked let's say in a camera store and then opened his own store. Why is deluxe so hysterical that she had to go to din torah and then to court? Or is this just how the world is today. What is mine is mine, what is yours is mine.

Hoe many children does he have. Is he of the age where he has to marry off kids. Do they care? does anyone care, or all everyone can do is talk talk talk.

  • At 10:05 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

haha. care??? who - the rabbonim? the highest bidder wins the case. they have no problem marrying off their kids. somebody just makes another melave malke or a "tea party". they live in the nicest houses too. and they don't need training either.

you know people, i travel back & forth because i have family in virginia. i used vamoose & liked it. next time i will try the other because its more convenient from where i leave from. the real issue we passengers are concerned about is: are the drivers licenced operators in good standing. i dont get the logic of the whole magilla either but more visitors would post here if they understood the words you choose to use. while i believe in healthy competition & dont the idea of one co. pushing another out, keep in mind that from we passengers points of view, we care about safety, convenience, reliability, cleanliness, location to suit our needs, & legal licensure & safety record. if i knew wash delux had been cited then i'd go out of the way to use the other. and vice versa. so you can continue the banter or you can help us all by taking a look at safety records, on-time history, and proper licencing. thanks for allowing me to give my view as a passenger.
