Chicago, I'll - Judge Rules 9-Year-Old Need Not Get Circumcised

Chicago, I'll - A judge ruled that a 9-year-old need not be circumcised as his mother wanted.

A dispute between the boy's divorced parents about whether to circumcise him escalated into a court case, and Cook County Judge Jordan Kaplan declared in his ruling that granting the boy's father an injunction blocking the procedure, the boy could decide for himself whether to be circumcised when he turns 18.

In a statement, the Doctors Opposing Circumcision said the judge's ruling protected "the boy's legal right to bodily integrity."
"The ruling opens a very interesting question," said the group's John Geisheker. "If the benefits of circumcision are not available to a 9-year-old, what does that say about infants?"

The practice of circumcising infant males is rare in Europe, while it is declining but remains common in the United States.

Is the kid Jewish, or was this the case of a medical circumcision?

I think any judge belonging to a religion that requires circumcision should have recused himself from this case. Any thoughts?

Yes it is, Mark. If the judge is Jewish (Kaplan sounds pretty Jewish to me), he cannot be impartial. He's either strongly for circumcision (orthodox) or fervently despises and opposes it (if he's reform).

If both of the boy's parents and the boy himself are not Jewish, then you may be right.

Are you saying that a Jewish judge cannot rule such an issue as he automatically has to be for circumcision. How do you know the child is jewish?

Not so. Even most conservative and reform parents still have their sons circumcised (although some of the reform type erroneously think that having the doctor perform the circumcision in the hospital is enough and you don't have to do a bris millah with a mohel). Probably only the nuts who believe in so-called "Humanistic Judaism," an entirely made-up secular "religion", are actually anti-circumcision.

Most Reform Jews do make a bris with a mohel, many with an orthodox mohel.

some don't, only a very small number are against circumcision.

    some Humanistic Jews are anti-circumcision
