NEW YORK (AP)  -- Peace officers are trained for many types of situations, but capturing an alligator isn't really one of them.

But, when an alligator turned up behind one of the buildings at the Spring Creek Towers in East New York, officer Luis Hernandez said he knew just what to do.

"My partner grabbed his tail, I jumped on his head, and we tied his mouth up with a shoelace," Hernandez said.

The NYPD says the 2 1/2 foot creature wasn't an alligator, but a Cayman Lizard.

Hernandez begs to differ. "I've seen a picture of a Cayman Lizard. It's not a Cayman Lizard...it's an alligator."

Hernandez says it wasn't really dangerous, either, more like macho.

"It actually hissed at us and tried to snap at us," said Hernandez.
