New York, NY - CCRB Wants Police-Card Rules

New York, NY - A watchdog groups want the NYPD to lay down some rules about the police union courtesy cards that many motorists display in hopes of beating traffic tickets.

The Civilian Complaint Review Board says it has heard 11 cases in which it says cops improperly took the cards away from drivers.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly is looking into whether the cops should be allowed to revoke the cards, which are seen as a way to gain favor with the Finest. "It's understandable that police officers confiscated them from individuals who used the cards to try to unduly influence them," Kelly said.

In nearly a dozen cases, motorists say they flashed the cards after being stopped by cops - in hopes of catching a break. Instead, cops snatched the cards.
Even though the CCRB is investigating the cases, plenty of cops don't think the officers did anything wrong. "A card is not a get-out-of-jail-free card," said a highway patrol officer who didn't want his name used. "The cops feel they should not be in possession of them, so they take them."

Police are giving tickets at the stop sign on 36th Street and 14th Avenue - card heading toward Ocean parkway.

Police are giving tickets On Fort Hamilton and McDonald.  You must use the turning lane to turn onto McDonald heading toward the Prospect Expressway.  Cop hides in the Gas Station and gives tickets for everything.

There is no reason that a PBA card of any sort should get you out a ticket that is coming to you.
    Yes I'm a cop.

There are an appalling number of accidents lately; just read vos iz neias and take note!
I believe that DINA diMALCHUSA DINA.
In that spirit NYPD should give everybody (Jews and non jews)a ticket for violations of red lights, improper turning lanes and especially IMPROPER USE OF CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING.
I got several cell phone tickets and I now use a headset, it beats holding a phone near your ear a million times in helping you drive. G-d forbid, if you accidentally cause an injury while holding a phone you might be more liable.

And an off-duty cop who is pulled over for a traffic violation should not get out of a ticket either.

...and the cops who are chatting on their cell phone while on the job supposedly on patrol! They are busy concentrating on their phone conversation and can't see the guy behind them giving them the donkey ears.

Unfortunately, the NYPD has become so low, and their whole campaign of increasing diversity among the force has only caused it to further erode.

Its about time we go back to the days of 6ft white male cops who scared the heck out of you by their look.

    Thanks for all your postings.

The unanimous ruling in my mikva is:

    The cops are right.

    Unanimous Opinion:

Fine you have a card but you can't use it repeatedly. So you have a choice either you give up your card, or ask it back and get your deserved ticket. That is what these cops are doing. They won't give you a ticket and take your card.

To appeal this ruling please post comment within 30 hours, and I will submit to the supreme LMV (late mikva veikers).

By the way , it is ILLEGAL for ANY OFFICER to be in a GAS station as a "post" to catch people in regard to seatbelt tickets and or cell phones.

THIS IS THE NYS LAW. You can look it up by going to nyc.gov

Anyone who got a ticket when a cop pulled out of gas station like the one at Mcdonals and F.Hamilton should tell the judge when fighting the ticket and you will automatically win your case.

PS: Cops do this at the Belt Pkwy Mobil gas station. ILLEGAL!!

I am not a police officer but I work at the 66 Pct and know the ins and outs.
