State Senater Larkin pushes for state casino approval before adjournment for the summer
The state Senate is set to adjourn for the summer in four days and Senator William Larkin of Cornwall-on-Hudson, chairman of the Racing and Wagering Committee, would like to see the state approve one casino before then.
Larkin notes that while legislation approved in late 2001 okayed three casinos for the Catskills, the governor most recently proposed one – at Kutsher’s – and he thinks one is better than none at this point.
Larkin said concerns about negative impacts may be overblown. “They don’t remember the hey-days of the borscht belt,” he said. “When this area was thriving all of the hotels – about 30 some hotels – there were 7,500 rooms. We’re now talking about, even four casinos; it would only be 4,500 rooms. So the traffic that they talk about isn’t as big because they don’t remember what it was like.”
The legislation that would approve the casino would also settle land claims between the state and the Native American tribe.
