Ulster County Says Local Governments Can Veto Casinos
On another Indian casino front Ulster County lawmakers from the town and the village last night unanimously approved two resolutions giving municipalities the right to veto casinos proposed for their communities. One of the resolutions approved last night forbids the county from approving a casino over the objections of local governments. In addition to Saugerties town boards in six other Ulster County communities have said they don't want casinos within their boundaries. But according to Assistant County Attorney Mark Frering, a Democrat from Kingston, last night’s resolutions has no legally binding effect on the county government. He called it political pandering by Republicans in an election year.
