MTA To Ban Heavy Trucks On Throgs Neck Bridge
The MTA wants to ban heavy trucks from the Throgs Neck Bridge during the daytime to prevent more cracks from forming on the roadway decks.
The bridge is not believed to be in danger of collapsing. The cracks in the steel roadway decks are being attributed to an upswing in the number of heavy tractor-trailers using the bridge. Some of those trucks can weigh as much as 120,000 pounds. There's an 80,000-pound weight limit on the bridge, but it hasn't been enforced.
The MTA wanted to start enforcing that ban Saturday, but several trucking companies are fighting in court to block it.
