Passaic, NJ - Kosher Meals Stopped At Jail
The Passaic County Jail has stopped serving kosher meals to inmates, breaching federal immigration detention regulations.
The jail had recently been ordering prepackaged kosher meals on a trial basis, but had stopped because it was deemed too expensive.
Officials said the jail will now make its own kosher meals by adding two layers of plastic wrap to the tray - one under the food, and one over the food.
But inmates said the two sheets of wrap does not meet their religious standards.
"They think putting Saran Wrap on the food makes it kosher," an inmate said.
A hunger strike is going on until the jail reinstates kosher meals, said some inmates participating in the strike.
