Jewish organizations reiterated their opposition to Judge Samuel Alito’s nomination for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. Alito was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday in a party-line vote, 10-8, and will be debated on the Senate floor later this week. His nomination has been opposed by the Union for Reform Judaism, National Council of Jewish Women and the National Jewish Democratic Council. “The stakes are too high and Judge Alito’s record is too extreme for individual senators to ignore the likelihood that he will, in fact, vote the way his entire record predicts, and indeed, as he has promised,” said the NCJW’s president, Phyllis Snyder. Agudath Israel of America has endorsed Alito’s nomination, which is expected to be voted on by the full Senate by the end of the month.
