Northfield, NJ - Synagogue Rethinking Cell Tower Proposal
Northfield, N.J. - A Shore Road synagogue is reconsidering a controversial proposal to host a 130-foot-tall radio tower on its property.
The president of Beth Israel Congregation, said based on feedback from 450 members, “We may reconsider our position and ask out of the contract.”
He said the offer from T-Mobile, the cell-phone company, to host the tower would bring the congregation about $15,000 a year - far less than the $5,000 a month that some opponents said the synagogue stood to gain from having a tower on its property.
In a meeting this month, several neighbors and parents clashed most sharply skeptically questioned an expert for T-Mobile who assured the crowd that the tower wouldn't present any health risks to people. Company representatives said repeatedly that the proposal was well within all state and federal safety limits.
