Israel - Faulty Sirens Send Residents of North Dashing Back Into Shelters
Israel - Rocket-warning sirens sounded in northern Israel on for the first time since a cease-fire went into effect along the Lebanese border.
The sirens sounded due to a technical malfunction. There were no reports of rockets landing anywhere in the north.
Sirens sounded in the Hula Valley and in the northern towns of Kiryas Shmona, Tzafes and Rosh Pina, and Israeli Radio announced that residents of the towns should seek shelter.
"I was terrified, terrified," said Hedva Sabagi, 39, the owner of a confectionery shop in Kiryas Shmona's central mall, which received a direct hit from a Hezbollah rocket three weeks ago, smashing a mobile phone shop. "I only came back yesterday after a month away, so I'm very nervous about things like that," she said.
Within a minute, the streets of Kiryas Shmona, which were hectic with cars and people setting about returning to normal, were virtually empty. Panic strained people's faces as they sprinted for cover underground or into concrete buildings.
