New York - Bottled Water Recalled
New York - An upscale grocery-store chain recalled its own brand of bottled water in five eastern states, saying it showed high levels of bromate.
Officials for Rochester-based Wegmans Food Markets Inc. said it was the first time in recent memory they've recalled a product so widely used.
The recall affects 71 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia.
The Environmental Protection Agency says years of drinking water with high bromate levels could lead to a higher risk of cancer.
"Until we receive conclusive test results that verify these products meet (federal) regulations and our own quality standards, we felt it was best to issue a voluntary recall," Wegmans spokeswoman said. "We are hopeful that we will resolve this matter quickly and once again offer these products."
The company made FORTUNE magazine's list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" for nine consecutive years starting in 1998, and it ranked first in 2005.
