Portsmouth, NH - Rabbi Receives Hate Mail
Portsmouth, NH - A Brentwood man who pleaded guilty to threatening the president three years ago is back in trouble.
This time 23-year-old Elijah Wallace is accused of mailing anti-Semitic letters to a Portsmouth rabbi and threatening the Jewish community.
The police captain said that Wallace claims to be affiliated with a white supremacist group and sent several letters to a local rabbi containing "anti-Semitic statements," "very inflammatory language" and "very vivid references (about) violence toward Jewish people." The charge relates to one letter, while other letters are being examined for possible further consequences, the captain said.
He described the mail as "very disturbing," part of the reason it has been sealed from the public. The captain said the police department requested the letters be sealed to prevent copycat crimes and keep the "very inflammatory" threats and language out of public view.
Police charged him with criminal threatening.
Wallace pleaded guilty in 2003 to threatening the president and was sentenced to 33 months in a federal medical prison. He had admitted sending a letter to in which he said he wanted to shoot President Bush. Wallace also was sentenced to three years' probation.
Police say Wallace could face enhanced penalties in the latest incident since it is considered a hate crime.
He is being held at the county jail for an unrelated crime and is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.
