Baltimore, MD - Battle Between One Couple is Drawing Attention from the Jewish Community

Baltimore, MD - Cynthia Ohana recently got a divorce from her ex-husband Ephraim but in orthodox Jewish law, Ohana cannot get a Jewish divorce from her husband unless he agrees. But Ephraim Ohana has refused to grant his ex-wife a Jewish divorce, and now Cynthia Ohana is reaching out for help.

Demonstrators gathered outside the University of Baltimore School of Law to voice concerns about the bitter divorce.
Dr. Joshua Karlip of Baltimore Hebrew University says Jewish law clearly states a man must be the one to grant the woman a divorce. She cannot date, re-marry, or have children until the divorce is granted. "In the majority of cases the man gives the woman a divorce however in rare cases the man is recalcitrant," says Karlip, adding "he uses this technicality in the law, that he has to initiate the divorce, as a way to punish the woman."

This means wives like Cynthia who want a divorce are only left with the power of public persuasion, hoping she can embarass him into granting her a Jewish divorce.

It is about time that the so called orthodox rabbonim have rachmanut on so many agunot. The get is written on the Torah, and the men are misusing a law, sometimes to punish the women others,to make a real big bank account out of a mitzva and letting these women suffer for a long period of time...sometimes even years....is this a chilul Hashem or what??!! Where are the Rabonim????? Why should ehrliche women and children suffer for something that is man made suffering??!! Isn´t sad enough that for some reason (most times-men´s fault)they are divorcing, so why make it worse...why let the hurt be so much more and not divorce as human beings and as our heiligue Torah commanded us!!!!
It is sad that so many of these men that leave their wives as PRISIONERS are so called talmidei chachomim, or they are let by rabbonim in town to enter any synagoge and receive aliah by the Torah. This is called sarcasm- by whom ...by our Rabonim that let such men do such terrible sins against wonderful women!!!!!
    How can we stop this???????????????

Having a cousin of mine who went through this very scenario over a period that lasted more than TEN YEARS, I propose that they do exactly what they used to do to such rashaim: Reis eim tzu bisselech, biz er iz kimat toit, biz her shreit un beit rachamim. Un demetz ken er shraben ah get. Azoi vi es daf tzu zein.

Such men should NEVER be allowed to perpetuate these malicious tactics again.

    Completely Fed Up- Brooklyn
