Sydney, Australia - Alleged Nazi War Criminal to Face Extradition Hearing

Sydney, Australia - An 84-year-old Nazi war criminal accused of killing a Jewish teenager in his native Hungary during World War II took a step closer to being the first Australian to be extradited to face war crimes. Charles Zentai lost a court challenge to extradition proceedings requested by Hungary.

He has been accused of killing an 18-year-old Jewish man in 1944 for failing to wear a Star of David as required in countries controlled by Nazi Germany. Zentai and two fellow soldiers are alleged to have tortured and killed the man before weighing his body down with stones and dumping him in the Danube River.
Zentai fled Budapest after the killing. His two alleged accomplices were jailed for the murder in the 1940s. He emigrated to Australia in 1950 after many years living in Germany, has denied the accusations.

He said in January he was ready to travel to Hungary to clear his name, but since then has been fighting against his extradition.
