Shofar Blowing Contest
Eleven days before Rosh Hashana, New York's first Great Shofar Blast Off yesterday tooted, bellowed and cried through tiny Herald Square Park. One by one, some of the nation's most seasoned blowers of the ram's horn got the chance to show off their style, technique and sheer, sweaty, vein-popping power.
They came with their ram's horns in hand, 10 men with strong lungs and weathered lips. But only one could leave as grand champion.
When it was over, the judges chose as the winner Kalman Feinberg of Teaneck, N.J., who had a relatively smooth tone. He gets a trip for two to Israel.

he knows that when there is shofar blusing in middle of the street there will be cameras so he makes sure to be there. as far as knowing about shofar, what do you expect from a letz, to take it seriously?

The judge was not David Letterman, but Paul Shaffer - Letterman's band leader - who by the way - knows how to daven. He has been an "avel" and has davened at Lincoln Square Synagogue. He comes to morning minyan, wears tefillin, and has led the davening, too. I have seen it.
As for the winner, Kalman Feinbreg. He is an electrical engineer, a graduate of Yeshiva of Flatbus and Yeshiva College
