Kashras Problem On The Horizon, With The Vaccination Of Birds Against The Deadly Bird Flu Virus
Paris - A in Paris raised the question that the vaccination of birds against the deadly avian flu virus might not be kosher.
Rabbi Simon Dahan, a member of Paris’ Beth Din, said that the European Commission approval of French and Dutch plans to vaccinate millions of their poultry against bird flu, might cause a problem in regard to kashrus.
“If they conduct the vaccination on the lungs or the neck, the animal might not be kosher anymore,” Dahan said.
Dahan is a respected European authority in regard to kashrus and pointed out that if there was a problem in the vaccination, it would be extremely troubling for European Jews who eat kosher.
“Furthermore, vaccinating the poultry in the leg might also be a problem because the operation might alter some the animal fragile nerves, which are supposed to stay untouched,” the rabbi added.
