Albany - Jewish History On Display
Albany - The history of Schenectady's Jewish community is displayed across the walls of the Sage College Opalka Gallery off Albany's New Scotland Avenue.
The exhibit, "Jewish History & Community in Schenectady," is the ninth in a series of exhibits depicting the history of Jews in the Capital Region.
Schenectady had so many Jewish merchants in the first half of the 1900s that when the city's first Jewish millionaire, Jonathan Levy, who helped craft the financial package that brought General Electric to town, died, all the stores on State Street closed, said Harvey Strum, a Sage College professor.
