Quebec - PQ Charges That Montreal's Jewish Community Are Getting Special Treatment On Daycare
Quebec - The Parti Québécois was accused of demonizing Montreal's Jewish community by suggesting it is getting special treatment over daycare services, sparking an uproar in the National Assembly.
The Opposition party demanded to know why the Jewish community is being allowed to oversee the co-ordination of family daycare centres in a major portion of the city as reported on VOS IZ NEIAS.
The PQ argued that everywhere else in the province, the co-ordination of family daycare centres was established according to geographical boundaries rather than ethnic or religious considerations.
This repeated questions sparked an outcry from Liberal MLAs, who suggested the Opposition was conducting an anti-Semitic campaign. Outside the assembly, angry Liberal backbenchers such as Russell Copeman accused the PQ of taking aim at the Jewish community.
But the PQ responded that the government had changed the rules regulating the administration of family daycare centres to respond to the needs of a specific group and was trying to cover up its action by accusing the Opposition of racism. The PQ said it supports Jewish daycare centres as well as an increase in the number of family daycare spaces that the Jewish community may require. But the party is opposed to special treatment for cultural or religious groups that may give them more power than others over the management of the province's publicly funded daycare system.
