Jerusalem, Israel - Charedim Outraged Over Mixed School Show

Jerusalem, Israel - Female students at an ultra-Orthodox school in Jerusalem left the school's theater after men and women appeared on stage in a ceremony to award prizes for best looking schools in Jerusalem. Representatives from 32 schools from across the education spectrum, ultra-orthodox, religious, secular, and Arabs participated in the ceremony.

In order not to offend any of the attendants, the actors, who performed in scenes representing Jerusalem, were instructed how to behave on stage. "The Education Administration in Jerusalem, which organized the ceremony and invited everyone, warned the acting company that Charedim will also attend the ceremony. They asked us to be modest, have the women wear long sleeves and refrain from singing. They also asked us not say the word God explicitly when we read passages," said the actors' group leader Osher Ohana.

Despite the fact the acting group adhered to all the preconditions, female students left the theater. After the incident "there was certain unrest among members of the ultra-Orthodox council, who apparently thought that the performance wasn't up to their standards, and we decided to stop the show in order to continue the ceremony in a more pleasant atmosphere," chairman of the parents association in Jerusalem, Eti Binyamin said. "The actors complied with all the requests and wore modest cloths. We're not sure what really bothered the Charedim," she said.

one of the participants of the ceremony said that all in all, this is a sad story. "We knew that the audience will comprise of Arabs and ultra-Orthodox and we tried our best not to offend anyone, but apparently it's not always possible. When I spoke to one of the ultra-orthodox principles my understanding was that they didn't like it that a mixed group of men and women went on stage to read verses from the bible. That must have been too much for them. Perhaps only men should have gone on stage, even though they didn't ask us to do so."

"it was again proven that the haredi coalition is all talk about tolerance, but they don't even display on iota of tolerance. I wish they would display the same tolerance they're asking others to display toward them."

If they had day jobs they wouldnt ever consider making a whole balagan.
I think the police should have arrested one of them as an example to NOT disturb the piece.
If i was a cop, i would, no questions asked.
These kanoyishe charedim are thugs, and they need to be put in their placeonce and for all
These are the same thugs that throw rocks on shabbos, steel babies for buriel, and side with baby killers.

The way I understood this news post it did not make it sound like the rock-throwing crowd were the ones who walked out.

The ones who walked out are not wackos. This is basic halacha, although females are allowed to listen to both men and women sing, this is a school we're talking about and for chinuch purposes they did the right thing.

How can you suggest that the people who chose not to sit in that theater at that particular time be arrested? That's truly ludicrous.

BTW, what's the deal with throwing rocks on shabbos? They're as muktzah as cars are.
