Shandakan: Two lost hikers find their way after night in Catskill woods

Four guys went in, only two came out. Around 8 p.m. Wednesday night, Shandakan police got a call from the Kiryas Joel Office of Public Safety that two Hasidic males were lost while hiking in the Catskills Mountains. The hiking party of four went into the woods at the Slide Mountain Trailhead around 4 p.m. with one sandwich and a small bottle of water, police said. Two of the men found their way out and hitched a ride back to their camp in Liberty. They called to report the other two – 30-year-old Moshe Silberstein of Lakewood, NJ, and 15-year-old Mordechai Ungarischer, of Brooklyn – didn’t came back. A search started at 9 p.m. and was called off “well after” midnight, police said. The search resumed yesterday morning with Department of Environmental Conservation police, state forest rangers, a state police K-9 unit, Town of Shandakan police and Kiryas Joel volunteers.Around 8:45 a.m., the two had found their way back out about 4 miles away from where they began and found a pay phone.“They were a little scuffed up, but otherwise OK,” said Detective Fred Holland, of the Town of Shandaken

Rabbi Edgar Gluck is called State -1 because he is the statewide coordinator for Hatzalah. At this time Rabbi Gluck has no affiliation with any police departments, but he is the head chaplain for the Chief Medical Examiners office, and has very close ties to the United Nations.
