A camouflage-color box detonated this morning after being found against the front door of Citizen's Bank contained a wrist watch, flashlight and pen, Ramapo police said.

The Rockland Sheriff's Department bomb squad detonated what police described as a suspcious package. They detonated it because of what it looked military and where it was found. The building, formerly Provident Bank, is located on Route 45 at East Hickory.

Citizens Bank employees found the box just before 8:45 a.m. leaned against the center of two glass doors, Detective Sgt. John Lynch said.

It turned out the wrist watch and other items were made by Paul Jardin, a California-based company, police said. No employee claimed knowledge of ordering items from the company.

"it was definitely suspicious because of where it was placed," Lynch said. "And it looked military. We tried to contact the company in California. Because of the time difference, the company wasn't open for business yet."

The Sheriff's Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation will look at the remaining pieces for evidence, Lynch said.

Bank employees went back into the building at about 10 a.m.

Bomb squad detonates box at Ramapo bank

The Rockland bomb squad detonated a camouflage-colored box yesterday that was found propped up against the front door of the Citizens Bank on Route 45.
Investigators later learned the box contained a wristwatch, flashlight, pen and key chain made by a designer company, Ramapo police said.
Police described the package as suspicious when it was found by employees just before 8:45 a.m. at the 253 N. Main St. building.
Police said the origin of the box was unknown and that it had words on it that were related to the U.S. Army and the manufacturer. Because of that, police said, the Rockland Sheriff's Department Bomb Unit was called and police evacuated the building.
"It was definitely suspicious because of where it was placed," Detective Sgt. John Lynch said.
Citizens Bank employees found the box against the center of two glass doors, Lynch said.
No employee claimed knowledge of having ordered the items from the company, Paul Jardin in California, police said.
Police tried calling the company, but the West Coast business was not open when the package was found, Lynch said.
"And it looked military," Lynch said. "We tried to contact the company in California. Because of the time difference, the company wasn't open for business yet."
The bomb squad came to the bank and decided to detonate the small box, police said.
Bank employees went back into the building about 10 a.m.
The Sheriff's Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation will look at the remaining pieces for evidence, Lynch said.
The incident marked at least the second time in two days that the bomb squad was called.
On Wednesday afternoon, the unit investigated a backpack left in the Spring Valley village Board of Trustees' conference room in Village Hall. The municipal building and court were evacuated for about 30 minutes. No explosive device was found.
