Montebello, NY - Synagogue Plan Raises Traffic Concerns

Montebello, NY - The proposed construction of a synagogue off Montebello Road has raised concerns from some residents about more traffic in the neighborhood.

The Monsey Jewish Center is planning to move to the village from its home of nearly 40 years off Route 306, because many of its members have relocated to the Suffern area.
As proposed to the village Planning Board, the construction would be on the south side of Montebello Road, just west of Finnegan Lane. The plans show a 15,026-square-foot synagogue, a residence for the rabbi and parking for 80 cars.

The Planning Board's meeting drew an overflow crowd of residents, including some members of the congregation.
"I have a concern about the traffic issue on Montebello Road," said resident Andrea Winograd, who told of congestion already resulting from Suffern Middle School and Montebello Elementary School.
Asra Kibria, whose yard is adjacent to the site, had issues closer to home. "My main concern would be noise," Kibria said. "I have no problem with people worshiping. I just don't want it to get noisy."

The Planning Board has asked the developer for a traffic study.
