A Greyhound bus traveling from New York City to Montreal has overturned on Interstate 87, and there are reports that five people have died in the accident.
A New York State police official says patrols at the scene report five deaths, but they have not yet been confirmed by a coroner.
The accident happened near Westport, about 150 km south of Montreal, and 177 km north of Albany. Interstate 87, also known as The Adirondack Northway, was closed for most of the evening around exit 31.
Witnesses say the bus veered off the highway, crashed through the guardrails and rolled down a bank into the median, landing on its roof. The roof and back end of the bus were crushed in.
The Associated Press reported that some passengers were still trapped on the bus at 8:20 p.m., about 90 minutes after the accident.
About 20 other passengers were seen lying on blankets and stretchers while receiving care from medical personnel.
About 13 ambulances arrived to take the injured to hospitals in nearby Elizabethtown, Plattsburgh and Glens Falls.
Greyhound reports there were 52 passengers and a drive onboard.
The bus, Greyhound No. 4014, departed New York at 1 p.m. It made stops in Albany and Saratoga Springs before the crash.

State police believe up to five people are dead. At least 20 passengers were lying on blankets and stretchers while receiving care from medical personnel. The back and top of the bus was crushed and one of its back wheels was turned inward. All five Jews on the bus survived with minor injuries.
The bus, No. 4014, departed New York at 1 p.m. and made stops in Albany and Saratoga Springs before the crash, said Greyhound spokeswoman Anna Folmnsbee. There were 52 passengers and one driver onboard, she said. It was traveling northbound on Interstate 87 at about 6:45 p.m. when it overturned just before exit 31 near Elizabethtown.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Elizabethtown, Plattsburgh and Glens Falls. CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh was in disaster mode and called City Police Department for help with crowd control.
Mike Hildebran, a spokesman for Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center in Plattsburgh, said 25 people had been treated there as of 10:30 p.m. and several more were en route. The patients were of all ages, including a few children, and had injuries including cuts, bruises and broken bones.
The highway remained closed late Monday between Exits 30 and 31 in both directions.

Deflated Tire May Have Caused Deadly Greyhound Crash Upstate
August 29, 2006
The fifth and final body from an overnight Greyhound bus accident was pulled from the wreckage Tuesday, and state police say they may know what caused the crash.
Fifty-two passengers and the driver were on board the bus that was headed from Port Authority in Manhattan to Montreal. Five people died in the crash, including the driver, but none of them were from the city. The other 48 passengers were all injured, one critically and eight were hospitalized.
The bus ended up on the center median of the Adirondack Northway in Elizabethtown. State police say they may have determined a cause, which is backed up by an eyewitness account.
State police say right now it looks like problems with one of wheels of the bus contributed to the crash.
"[The] tires, steering tires, front end tires on the bus... The tire may have been deflated in such a way that it caused a potential loss of steering that may have contributed," said Major Richard C. Smith of the New York State police.
One survivor offered a first-hand account of the crash.
"It just sped off the road and flipped over," said the passenger. "It was the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced."
"That's unknown, but the tire may have been deflated in such a way that it caused a potential loss of steering that may have contributed."
A Greyhound spokeswoman says the bus left the Port Authority at 1 p.m. Monday afternoon and made stops in Albany and Saratoga Springs before crashing at 6:45 last night, about 110 miles north of Albany. The next stop was Plattsburgh.
Three Canadian citizens ranging in age from 16 to 81 years old were killed in the crash, as was an 81-year-old from Long Island.
The driver, Ronald Burgess, also of Long Island, is among the dead.
Greyhound has set up an information hotline for friends and families of the passengers at 1-800-972-4583.
