Canada - Firebomber's Mother Gets Day in Court

Canada - The mother of the man convicted of setting fire to the Azrieli Library of United Talmud Torah elementary school two years ago begins her trial today.
Rouba El-Merhebi Fahd, 38, was charged with being an accessory to the fact in her son Sleiman's firebombing of the school back in April 2004, for which the 18-year-old received a 40-month sentence in a federal penitentiary.

El-Merhebi Fahd is accused of having tried to buy plane tickets to Brazil a few days before her son's arrest in an attempt to have him escape justice.
The younger El-Merhebi set fire to the school building on Passover Eve 2004 using cans of kerosene bought from the store he worked at. He shattered the library windows at the Beutel campus building and tossed in Molotov cocktails in the middle of the night. He said he was acting to avenge the assissination of sheik Ahmed Yasine, regarded as the spiritual leader of Hamas. Before returning to a party later that night, which he hoped to be able to use as an alibi, El-Merhebi left a note on the school door theatening more violence.
